Dark Chocolate ‘n Nut Butter Avocado Smoothie

Share

Look, I am not one of those crazy avocado people. I don’t try to sneak avocados into pancakes, pudding, and cake. I somehow doubt that you will ever catch me making Chocolate Beet Cupcakes with Chocolate Avocado Frosting. I won’t try to convince you that avocado brownies are somehow better than regular brownies.

However, that doesn’t change the fact that avocado and chocolate, when done well, are a really good combination. Add in some nut butter and a few other tasty items and you won’t feel like you’re eating a Millennial-inspired dessert at all.

At least, that’s what you can tell yourself.

To make the smoothie, you will need half of a ripe avocado, a banana, cocoa powder, peanut butter, almond butter, chia seeds, honey, almond milk, and some ice.

You can use raw cacao powder or just your run of the mill dark chocolate cocoa powder (I like Hersheys). But you should use a brand that doesn’t have any added sugar, if you are into that kind of thing. I get my cacao powder and most of the good things that are in my pantry from Trader Joe’s.

This has become one of my favorite ways to use a ripe avocado. The banana and avocado together make it incredibly creamy. You will want to invest in some cacao nibs to put on top to add some texture. I didn’t include them in the picture but I love to add blueberries to the top too.

This smoothie pairs well with a dreary, rainy day. Nothing brightens a day more than having a giant chocolate drink for breakfast.

This is not a lowfat drink. Let me repeat: this is not lowfat. But avocado is good, healthy fat!

I use both almond and peanut butter, but if you don’t have almond butter, you could totally just go for the peanut butter. But I personally love the mixture of both to make it a little more interesting.

What are some of your favorite ways to use a ripe avocado? If you haven’t ventured into the avocado-chocolate world yet, this smoothie is a great place to start.

Just don’t tell me when you have crossed over and start putting avocados in brownies. That is just too much.
