We love to go to new places! If you haven’t read about all the places we have gone together as a couple, you can check it out in my About section. My husband is always (literally, always) looking for good flight deals, so when he told me the flight price he found for getting us somewhere I have wanted to go for over six years, I said um, yes. Yes.
I am so excited about this next trip, I feel in many ways that it will be a perfect culmination of everything we have learned from our previous trips. There aren’t many big sights to see, as our itinerary will revolve around enjoying the views, relaxing, and eating delicious food. This will also be our first international trip where we rent a car for the whole trip. The only other time we have rented a car was for a few days in Iceland. It will be great to have the freedom of having a car.
If you want to keep up with my updates from the road, make sure you follow my Instagram account, @unexpecreal. I’ll also be writing some posts after we are back as well. Without further ado, here are the highlights of our upcoming trip!
Lake Bled, Slovenia
Our first leg of our trip will be spent in the picturesque town of Bled, Slovenia. The iconic lake in the middle of Bled’s mountains and rolling hills has been well-photographed, so I would be surprised if you didn’t recognize this slice of heaven. Basically any outdoor activity you can think of can be found in Bled. There are plenty of incredible viewpoints that I am looking forward to climbing to get my own picture of this gorgeous landscape!
Bled is also famously known for their cream cake, a delicacy of thin pastry sandwiched in between whipped cream and egg custard layers, and then cut into perfect seven-by-seven centimeter squares. This will be a huge splurge for me, but could you blame me for devouring at least one of these delectable desserts? I think our hardest decision will be deciding which lake-front establishment we want choose to enjoy the Bled cream cake!
Ljubljana is a chill city where the number one thing to do is people-watch. Seriously, the number one thing that Rick Steves recommends to do is to walk around the city, sit down at a cafe, and just drink it all in. I love that! One of my other favorite things to do is outdoor markets, and Ljubljana has a huge and lively market where you can find anything you can imagine. We will also be finally, finally, FINALLY be doing in Ljubljana what I can’t believe we haven’t done before: a culinary food tour!

After leaving Slovenia, we will head south west to Rovinj in the Istria region of Croatia. I have dreamed and been looking at pictures of Rovinj for a long time. Rovinj is an interesting place because of its influence from both Croatia, Italy, and Slovenia. It has a gorgeous fishing port on the north Adriatic sea. We can’t wait to explore the streets of this enchanting town, day trip to some southern points of the peninsula, and eat our weight in seafood.

Friuli Venezia Giulia, Italy
For the last couple of days of our trip will be in a part of Italy we have not been to before, the northeastern corner of Italy in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region. There is really very little we have “scheduled” for these days, the itinerary will consist of the following: wine, relaxing at our B&B, driving to nearby towns, wine, vineyards, and eating lots and lots of homemade pasta.
